Whether you’re a regular reader or visiting my blog for the first time, I promise this entry will change your life! You see, I recently went to a vegan potluck a friend was hosting in her home and she had made truffles for the dessert course. Being that I don’t bother with any dessert on the table unless it’s chocolate, I naturally gravitated towards those babies. What I experienced was a-may-zing!!! These truffles were rich, rich, rich considering what small bites they were. I asked my lovely hostess (ever so urgently) what these tasty morsels were?!? She said rather nonchalantly, “Oh, they’re just oreo truffles. They’re really easy. Just look for it on the internet and it will pop up.” So of course, I whipped out my smartphone, went to a fun new search engine I’m playing with called www.DuckDuckGo.com and searched “Oreo Truffles.” The recipe was only 3 ingredients—three!!! Not only were the ingredients simple, but they were ingredients I could easily substitute with vegan items! This was my kind of chocolate recipe!
I hightailed it to my local Trader Joe’s and picked up a box of vegan-beloved Joe-Joe’s, semi-sweet chocolate chips and vegan cream cheese. (Speaking of which, did you know Trader Joe’s now offers vegan cream cheese?!) Upon returning home, I proceeded to veganize the recipe I found online to create the magical and life-altering Vegan Oreo Truffles (not realizing at the time how many vegan recipes exist for Oreo Truffles—-where have I been?!) I later shared the truffles in lieu of cake at a birthday party I attended and even the most devout omnivore in the group loved them. I swear to you, these truffles are rich, decadent, easy to make, and freakin’ delish!
Below are the pictures featuring the ingredients I used. However, you can use any vegan-friendly brands of oreo-type cookie, cream cheese, or semi-sweet chocolate. I simply preferred not to use real Oreos because of the hydrogenated fats, but that’s a personal choice. You can even use Newman’s Own sandwich cookies (whose chocolate is Food Empowerment Project-approved), which is what I plan on doing next time! (Note: you might even try to buy Newman’s Own chocolate bars and melting those to make all of your chocolate ingredients ethical, but I know that approach can be a bit pricier for some of us–the choice is yours.)
